Before I change my mind and decide to go reward myself with (ugh) a new paint job for the house instead for my promotion, I need help picking out a digital SLR camera!
I'm having so much trouble picking between the Nikon D80 and the Canon Rebel XTi that I'm about to say screw it and spend it on otherwise guilt free house stuff. The Nikon is a better camera all around, but it has the price tag to prove it. Help! Is it worth it?

All I can say is that I've always had Nikon cameras and never been dissatisfied. By the same token I know quite a few people who swear by Canon. Six of one, half dozen of the other?
Maybe you can buy the Canon and use the price difference to buy some things for the house? Just a thought.
I had a hard time choosing between the Sony, the Canon and the Nikon. In the end I went with the Nikon D80 mainly because I felt that the menu system was more intuitive for me (easier to remember) and the physical feel was better in my hands. I normally shoot one-handed using a leather grip, so that's what I needed to test.
The D80 just fits me. I have never been this satisfied with a camera, going all the way back to my match needle Minolta SRT-202.
I added a Sigma 10-20mm lens for my interior wide angles and the Nikon SB-600 flash.
The Sony felt great also, but I was worried about being abandoned by Sony. It's not clear where they're going in the camera business.
You have probably already found that there are quite a few good digital camera review sites on the Web. I recommend reading at least a few of these before choosing.
I shoot the Xti and love it. I wanted the nikon d80 but my wife who has smaller hands couldn't handle it as well. No issues with the XTi at all.
The D80 is too large for my wife's hands, also. That was another reason to choose it. I am very selfish with my cameras. :)
I have incredibly small hands and ended up with the d70 last year. I absolutely love it! that said, i have a number of friends who bought the canon you're looking at and they're equally happy. i really don't think you can go wrong with either.
Good words.
Just wondering if you went ahead and bought a camera, or are still thinking about it. Nikon and Canon both make good cameras. Personally I like the Nikon, which is what hubby and I use. If you were to wait a bit longer they will probably be bringing out newer models, and those that you are interested in will be reduced in price, perhaps leaving you with a little money to put into the house.
